Ursache sind Bewegungen der tektonischen Platten in der Lithosph\u00e4re, die in der Umgebung von Japan aufeinandertreffen. Zu den Folgen einer Subduktion z\u00e4hlt der Japangraben. Insbesondere besteht die Sorge vor einem Erdbeben in Tokio. Als bislang schwerstes Erdbeben in Japan gilt das Beben vom 11. M\u00e4rz 2011.
